Its essential to inspect all rope access anchor points before each use and a thorough inspection carried out every six months. Rope Task load testing engineers can inspect, load test and issue certification for all rope access and abseil anchor points. Problems such as misuse, corrosion or poor installation by another contractor can be identified by a thorough examination using Rope Task's competent engineers.

The photograph below shows a poorly installed anchor point, identified by a thorough inspection by Rope Task. This anchor point is dangerous and should never have been tagged and passed as safe.

Installation does not conform to manufacturers installation instructions - the shoulder of the anchor point is not flush against the wall.

Fabric tensile roof maintenance

Rope Task have completed the cleaning and maintenance of a large tensile fabric roof in Hulme Manchester. Rope access technicians used all of their skills to access the structure and clean all fabric and supporting steelwork.

Rope Task also inspected and made remedial repairs to the rigging of the fabric roof and all rain water downpipes, this was all completed by our trained IRATA technicians.

Ease of installation

KeeWalk is offered in standard modules, which can be supplied ex-stock for rapid installation on vitually any rooftop project. The modules are supplied as 1.5m and 3m pre-assembled sections to suit the requirements of different roofs. These lightweight modules are constructed from glass reinforced nylon treads attached to aluminium support beams that are fixed to the roof surface.

Steps and a traverse option, complete with an adjustable hinge, enable Kee Walk® to be added to roof configurations from 0 to 35 degrees. Above picture shows the circular frame of the banner, in the centre of the photograph, that the banner sits in. How do you install a banner, 50 meters high, onto the side of a building with virtually no access? And also, how do you install neon lighting at that height?

The answer for our client was rope access, using our expert team the banner and the lighting system was installed in 5 days! Using only two rope access technicians.

Rope Task's supervisor for the job commented that the job was "difficult as the only access to the banner was a small door that lead to a very narrow ledge, we had to first install a safety line to allow us to access the ledge, the second problem was actually getting the banner close to the frame. Using specialist rigging techniques we held the banner in place with rope access equipment, that enabled us to install the banner onto the frame. The electrical installation using rope access, was completed quickly and easily, which even surprised both of us on the team as we thought this would be the most difficult part of the job."

Removing 10 Ton's of steel using Rope Access

Rope Task have been removing and replacing conveyor steel casing from a 60 metre tower at the Goodyear Wolverhampton site. Due to the design of the tower, the use of cranes has proved difficult, so the fabrication contractor called on the services of Rope Task to assist their own installers.

Rope Task have been burning, cutting, slinging, rigging and lifting the steel from the centre of the tower and replacing with new casing, all within a specific time window to enable production at the plant to continue.

As of May 2011, there were 292 operational wind farms in the UK, with 3,184 turbines and 5,267 MW of installed capacity. A further 3,854 MW worth of schemes are currently under construction, while another 5.4 GW have planning consent and some 8.7 GW are in planning awaiting approval. Due to the increase in renewable energy and location and design of wind turbines, maintenance, inspection and cleaning of turbines can create difficult access problems on areas of the turbine.

Fall Protection Safety Line Installation

The problem was access along an unprotected roof edge. Rope Task installed 70m of Keeline to the Radisson Hotel Liverpool to allow maintenance workers safe access along the front elevation of the building.

Out installation team designed the layout of the system, using parts of the original structure the fall protection system was installed using drill and tap methods. The system was then swaged at both ends and load tested to 10kN with a specialist load testing device.

Maintenance workers are know attached along the whole 70m of the system, they never have to detach from the system even when passing intermediate brackets.

High Rise Hotel Facade Cleaning - Rope Access

Rope Task completed the high rise cleaning of a major hotel chain this week. The building cradle has been out of commission for a number of months and so the only way to access the building was using rope access techniques.

Rope Task specialist trained operatives used a number of fall protection techniques to access the open roof and using pre-installed safety lines accessed all of the anchor points, attached ropes and descended down all elevations of the building to carry out a full facade clean of the hotel, safely and in record time.

Seagull Deterrent Installation Using Rope Access

Seagulls always perch on the highest points of a property, chimney pots and ridge lines on roofs for example. These are some of the most difficult to access areas of the building.

Rope Task were called to Kings Court Birmingham as other companies had not been able to come up with a means of access to install over 250m of anti-seagull spikes, due to the problem of difficult access to roof tops and ledges. Using a team of two rope access technicians, rigging ropes, installing anchor points and not forgetting the important job of installing the spikes, managed to complete the task.

When holes appeared in the Snowdon enclosure at London Zoo, the problem of access for repairs and future maintenance was solved by Rope Task. After installing a number of eyebolt anchor points, Rope Task technicians were able to access the whole of the structure using rope access techniques. This has now enabled easy access to the structure for rope access technicians, who since the initial installation of the anchor points have carried out a number of minor repairs to the structure.

Rope Task completed the cleaning of a complicated high rise office block today in Birmingham using a mixture of rope access, aid climb and abseil techniques. The office block in Edmund Street Birmingham had not been cleaned for the last 10 years due to the 3 metre overhang on the front elevation of the building.

Other access options had been considered, but Rope Task skilled technicians used every bit of there rope rigging experience to complete the rope access cleaning of the building.

The above photograph shows the width of the overhang on the front elevation of the building. Aid climb techniques and complicated rope rigging techniques were used to complete the high level building clean.

BS 7985:2009 Code of practice for the use of rope access methods for industrial purposes

BS 7985 gives practical advice and recommendations for good practice to those who use specialist rope access methods for work at height and those who commission rope access work.

The standard applies to anyone using safety harnesses, fall protection equipment and rope access methods. The standard applies to industrial rope access work only, where the prime activity is the work itself.

The recommendations in BS 7985 include:

Rope access - How to Rig anchor points on a deadweight trolley

When anchor points are limited, or in some instances non-existant, rope access operatives use deadweight trollies to act as an anchor. One major factor in the rigging of deadweights is the need for rescue if any emergencies arise during the work.

This is when Rope Task skilled technicians will "Rig For Rescue'. This means that we can rescue a stranded rope access technician without the need to spend additional time anchoring more rope and equipment. With the system that we use, we can simply lower the technician to the ground.

Deadweights are rigged using descenders that are locked off during normal working. Enough rope is stored at the anchor point to allow for the technician to be lowered to the floor in case of a rope rescue situation. This allows for a fast and efficient rope rescue and minimises the time that a stranded worker is hanging in his harness.

Rope Task have been approved by SM&MS for carrying out rope access and height safety support services for Lambert Smith Hampton.

Rope Task specialist rope access teams carry out varied maintenance painting and cleaning contracts using rope access techniques.
The speed at which Rope Task can respond to call outs and the installation of the rope access system can in most cases be less than 24 hours. Rope Task’s abseilers have over 10 years experience of industrial and commercial contracting on long and short term contracts. From using abseil painters through to abseilers removing large sheets of exterior glazing, all areas of building maintenance is covered by our rope access teams.

Contracts that Rope Task have recently completed are removal of curtain walling from Beetham Tower, these pieces of glass, weighing up to 900kg each were removed and replaced by rope access technicians. Glazing panels were safely removed and replaced using a detailed procedure and risk assessment that was completed by Rope Task and approved by leading UK construction contractors.

Rope access painting services were carried out at Liverpool Bulk Terminal on behalf of eon UK. This contract required rope access teams to slurry blast and apply specialist coatings to the two ship un-loaders at the site. Along with difficult access to the boom ties of the cranes, this contract was also carried out above the open dock area. This again proved that Rope Task could overcome the problem of difficult access to the work site and working over water. Our rope access team completed the slurry blasting and specialist coating of the front boom ties and “A” frame shaped structure of the ship un-loader.

Window cleaning is also a regular requirement of building managers. Glass replacement, using rope access techniques, is the cost effective way of accessing tall and unusually designed buildings. Gone are the days when building managers had to rely on house cradle systems and scaffold to replace damaged sheets of glass, Rope Task’s option of professional, trained, and supervised IRATA rope access teams offer a solution to the most difficult of access problems.

Rope Task have secured the contract to replace 93 glass elements measuring 3m x 1.5m and weighing in excess of 300kg. This task will be completed on two of the UK’s tallest buildings. Our installation teams are not only IRATA trained rope access technicians, but have also completed training in rigging and lifting and NEBOSH health and safety qualifications.

Rope Task’s safety solution for glass transport includes the use of a dual circuit vacuum sucker along with our secondary safety device, consisting of load bearing ratchet straps that hold the glass to the vacuum sucker, in the event of failure of the vacuum sucker and are then only removed once the glass has been installed.

Petzl Rig Descender versus Petzl Stop – Rope Access Abseil Descender

After a 20 storey descent using the Petzl Stop descender, without pressing the handle to activate the Petzl stop, by the way, the stop was new and the ropes were in their first month of use, so were both in excellent condition, we decided that we needed to try out a new descender.

Rope Task purchased a number of Petzl Rig descenders that have proved excellent on all of the rope access jobs that we have used them on. From multi-storey descents on abseil window cleaning contracts, through to rope access glazing tasks, they have proved a top descender and a good replacement for the Petzl Stop on all of our recent rope access contracts.

They are great on descents, to add into a pulley system and also great for short ascents of the rope. Only down side is that we would revert back to the Petzl Stop on rope access grit blasting and painting contracts, as like the Petzl ID descender, they get easily and quickly full of grit and paint. On these rope access task’s, the Petzl Stop is the choice, due to being easy to clean and examine.

Overall we highly rate the new Rig descender, but as the manufacturers user manual says, its only for rope access experts, so new IRATA rope access technicians should really stick to the Petzl ID as this is probably the safest descender on the market for abseil and rope access workers.

We were approached by B LEYS school to run a sponsored abseil off of their new building in aid of the fundraising day on the 8th April. The money raised will go towards childrens school fees in rural areas of Malawi as well as Shool resources and buildings. All of the students took part in a walk around the school site whilst the staff took part in the abseil.

Initially it did not look like the abseil would be possible as the take of point was not protected by suitable anchors. Thats when Haydn from Ropetask ltd www.ropetask.com was called in for his expert advice and fitted what was needed for the abseil to go ahead free of charge.

When the time came staff were harnessed up and dangled over the side of the school building to the cheers of the students. Some were extremely nervous but they all bit the bullet and took the challenge. The totals are still being tallied up but all involved felt that it was a total success.

Scratched glass or damaged glass is a real problem on new and existing buildings and money loses can be costly. Rope Task have extensive experience in removing scratches and damage from glass for a number of building and facilities managers. Rather than replacing damaged glass Rope Task can remove stains, damage and cracks at a fraction of the cost.

An additional problem is when you have damaged glass on a 40 storey skyscraper. Rope Task IRATA rope access team completed the removal of stains on the external face of the floor to ceiling glass, of one apartment, using high powered polishing machines and rope access techniques, all at an height of over 130 metres.

The team consisted of an IRATA level 3 supervisor and an IRATA level 2 technician who completed the complex task in under four days.

The annual thorough inspection of fall arrest systems, fall restraint systems, eyebolts, abseil anchor points, horizontal life lines and vertical fall protection systems must be a priority for all facilities and site managers.

This was brought home to Rope Task test engineers when they were asked to carry out the annual inspection of an 80m fall restraint system in the West Midlands area. The system was installed by Rope Task on to metal roof sheets, since the last inspection a number of these roof sheets had seriously corroded and sheets that should have held the posts for the fall restraint system, were now compromised due to the corrosion on the sheets. Holes had also appeared in the centre of the roof, making for a very hazardous working environment. See the video of just how corroded the roof sheets have become.

Dyfi Enduro Mountain Bike Race

Rope Task are entering a rider in the Dyfi Enduro. This year the event will be held on Sunday May 1st. The event, now in its tenth year is a simple big loop, starting in Machynlleth town centre, which heads out of town for a tour of the Dyfi forests best hidden trails. It has long unrelenting fire road climbs, and long rough technical descents, it finishes deep in the forest, riders then spin back into town on lanes to event HQ for (hopefully) a prize and a coveted finisher’s mug. Total distance will be around 60km, subject to final route tweaking in the weeks before the event.

High Level Sign Removal

Rope Task successfully completed the removal of all four "Hilton" signs and logo's from the 50 storey Beetham Tower in Manchester. Rope Task already have a strong reputation for high level glazing replacements at this site, so were the ideal choice to remove the signs.

The signs weighed as much as 300kg and were installed at level 23 on all four elevations. Using the house cradle instead of rope access techniques the signs were removed with the minimum of disruption to the hotel, residents and local businesses.

Cladding panels on the Beetham Tower development became dislodged from the structure due to high winds and fell to the ground. Roads around the development were closed and caused major disruption to traffic and local businesses.

The initial call for a rope access team was made around 2pm in the afternoon. Rope Task supplied a team of rope access technicians and were on site by 3.30pm the same day. Rope Task technicians overcame the obstacle of limited access to the effected elevations by utilising advanced rigging skills to allow a team to access the elevations via smoke vents on the 37th floor, which allowed them to secure lose cladding panels on the structure.

Working at heights of over 100 metres (330ft), Rope Task secured lose cladding and all roads and businesses were open within 48 hours, without the need for conventional access such as temporary cradles, MEWPS or tower cradles.
